PLEASE NOTE: Displaying photographs on the Internet is a tricky business. Very few people are using a color-corrected monitor and almost no browsers, including Internet Explorer and FireFox, know how to use the color profiles embedded into images. So if the colors in the photos look odd, especially if they're unnaturally bright, it's because your browser is mis-interpreting the image. The only browser that I know of that will properly display photographs is Safari.

A poor compromise

Filed under: Wedding Photography — Cliff @ 12:06 pm

Well, we came to a compromise on the church that wouldn’t allow any photography. Samantha and I will be allowed to photograph the ceremony, but we have to sit in one spot and not move. We’ll also rig a radio-controlled camera at the back of the church.

So, yes, the B&G will get some pictures of their wedding ceremony. But they won’t be anywhere the quality they’re paying us to deliver.

I think this stinks.

A nasty surprise

Filed under: Wedding Photography — Cliff @ 10:31 pm

I was talking with a secretary of a church where I’ll be shooting a wedding in a few weeks. We were going over some stuff like which area would host the ceremony when she dropped a bombshell on me: “You do realize that we don’t allow any photography at all during the ceremony, don’t you?

Well, that floored me. Many churches don’t allow you to use flash and some restrict you to the back and sides of the church. But I’ve never seen one that won’t allow anyone to take pictures.

I felt so bad for the bride when I had to tell her this. She had no idea of the restriction and I don’t blame her, who would have thought to ask?

I don’t know what’s going to happen. It’s going to be tough for her to find another church on such short notice and I’m sure the invitations have already gone out.

Please say a prayer for my poor bride, she’s such a nice woman and I know she’s really been thrown for a loop on this. I’ll let you know what happens.

Big honkin’ printer

Filed under: Computers, Photography tools, Printing — Cliff @ 9:48 pm

I’ve been looking to move my printing in-house for a while now. I’ve been using a professional photo lab in Minnesota. They’ve done an excellent job, but I’m tired of waiting 3-5 days to get prints back. Sometimes I can only realize a shot’s color balance isn’t quite right or that I’ve missed a bit of retouching work by seeing the actual print.

So I’ve purchased a new printer from HP. What a beast! It’s over four feet wide, over two feet deep, and stands 3-1/2 feet tall! And this is the small model! But the output I’ve seen is amazing. Plus, unlike standard photos that can begin to fade in as little as 10 years, the prints from this system won’t show any fading for a minimum of 150 years! If you use the right paper and display them properly, the lifespan can go over 300 years! And that’s not when they’re completely faded, its when you can barely see the fading start.

I can’t wait for it to get here, but I don’t look forward to carrying it to my upstairs office, the shipping manifest lists the weight at 225 pounds!
